The Niirala border station did not have backup power. The backup power system was to ensure the availability of electricity at the international border crossing point in exceptional conditions, thus ensuring that the data communication connections and most important terminals would function and border traffic would flow as usual in all conditions. Otherwise, manual inspection methods would have to be used during power outages, which would slow border inspections significantly. 50 percent of the project funding was received from the European Regional Development fund and 50 percent from the Finnish Border Guard.
