Metal mining has been the main form of industry in central Europe since the 13th century. The Regio Mineralia project comprises historians, geologists, archaeologists and environmentalists to study this mining culture, which is unique to the Upper Rhine region and its landscape. A historical atlas of mining industry sites will be produced to raise awareness among schoolchildren and the general public about this aspect of natural and cultural cross-border heritage. There will also be a major exhibition, accompanied by a catalogue.
