The main purpose of the project was to implement research, documentation and revival-based activities pertaining to folk music in the runic song area between Kuusamo and Lieksa. Th e research and data collection also involved, in addition to runic songs, other kind of folk music. It was the intention that runic song should be saved for the future generations with the means off ered by information technology. Th e purpose was the preservation of the existing oral cultural heritage and the preservation of folk music in particular in Kainuu, Koillismaa, North Karelia, and Olonets and White Sea Karelia, through research, education and publication activities. Th e intention of the project was also to increase the cooperation in music education and research in East Finland and the Republic of Karelia. Th e goal was to create a folk music activity unit, based on a strong and original model, serving the whole country as well as the international community. Th e project wanted to support the tourism strategy based on the Kalevala theme in Kainuu.
