Sleep disorders are widespread and can have significant consequences for affected individuals as well as economic & other consequences for entire society. Despite the great demands, there is still an insufficient number of working Sleep Medicine Centers (SMCs), trained professionals in sleep medicine – somnologists and sleep technicians in the cross-border area. The common problems and challenges of the SLEEP MEDICINE project are shortage of working SMCs, somnologists-experts in sleep medicine and sleep technicians in the region of Dalmatia (Southern Croatia) and adjacent regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The only working SMC in the area is the one in Split, that covers patients from Croatia and parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Split SMC is under extra pressure and patients from Bosnia and Herzegovina don’t have the opportunity to perform diagnostic & therapeutic procedures near the place of their residence. So the reasons to start this project is to assure a sufficient number of working SMCs and somnologists, as well as sleep technicians in the cross-border area. Moreover, to assure that the SMC is working in full accordance with the developing European standards and guidelines of the European Sleep Research Society. The target groups that will benefit from the project are the patients that will be able to undergo diagnostic & therapeutic interventions regarding their medical condition near their place of residence. Establishing a new SMC in Mostar will also diminish the pressure of the Bosnian patients to Split SMC and will increase its capacities for Croatian patients. The common server for storage & exchange of patients’ data & medical records from both SMCs, will also facilitate the everyday clinical routine & approach to the patients’ data, and would potentiate the exchange & transfer of knowledge/skills in sleep medicine in the cross-border area.
