The project entails the completion of the Campo Marzio - Draga Sant’Elia bicyclepedestrian route, which develops along the old railway line, which connected the Trieste- Campo Marzio railway station with that of Hrpelje-Kozina along the Istrian Pula-Divača railway line. The interested territory encompasses the municipalities of Trieste and S. Dorligo della Valle – Dolina for an overall 12 km up to the State border. The first stage was financed under Community Initiative Programme INTERREG IIA / Phare- CBC Italy-Slovenia and envisaged the extraordinary maintenance of the track, including aspects concerning safety, and the partial paving of the track. The second stage was financed by autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and consisted in new construction work to ensure the use of the entire track, from via Orlandini to the border. This project is part of the third stage of the works and aims at making the track smoother as regards road crossings, thanks to the construction of a subway where the track crosses Provincial road n. 11 of Prebenico, at San Giuseppe della Chiusa. Furthermore this stage envisages the provision of logistic support to the track users, by means of parking areas and a service centre (information centre - bar and restaurant) at the beginning of the route in the district of San Giacomo in Trieste, next to via Orlandini. Properly completed and equipped with urban furniture and signs, as well as rest areas, the route becomes particularly appealing with a strong visual effect, thus turning into a major resource to receive large tourist flows.
