Deskrizzjoni qasira tad-ditta ta' konsulenzaFood decay and food waste are cross-border problems. While a problem all along the product value chain (production, processing, distribution and consumption), the processing phase is when more than 50% of the waste actually takes place, principally in the packaged foods sector. However, to measure the integrity of the products on the production lines, samples are taken and opened every day on a random basis. By using a statistical approach, the manufacturer obtains information about the overall production without, however, eliminating defective packaging. This method is destructive, produces a large volume of waste and lowers the consumption date limits of fresh foods. The solution would, therefore, be the systematic analysis of every packaging with a non-destructive method. The TERAFOOD project therefore aims to create a compact sensor enabling the measurement of the biochemical composition of the atmosphere inside the packaging and thus allow individual checks throughout the lifetime of the commodities. The expertise of each technical partner on either side of the border is, therefore, essential to carry out this project and propose a truly interdisciplinary approach.
