SOUTH SAMI - LANDSCAPE AND HISTORY
South Sami - landscape and history
Basic information
-
Brief description of the consultancy firmThe project will be based on cross-border cooperation and generate new knowledge on South Sami history. Such documentation is necessary for understanding of the landscape’s significance and value. The results will be made available and could be used in order to strengthen Sami efforts towards an increased local influence in the management of the mountains thanks to the knowledge that has been made available and to strengthened competences in various issues inside local communities. The project will deepen the knowledge about Sami history. The project will be linked to research by developing new research paper on South Sami culture history. This will be achieved partially through the existing contacts with the universities in Norway and Sweden and partially through the fact that the research paper developed in the course of the project implementation can be further used for research, for instance of the 14C datings of settlements and previously untreated archive material. The project will highlight the traditional Sami knowledge and use of the landscape in order to demonstrate the continuity and quality (intensity) in the use of the landscape, to compare it with today's use of land and to show the dependence between landscape, people and reindeers. The project will also highlight other traditional Sami occupations beside reindeer husbandry, such as hunting, fishing and agriculture. The project will disseminate new knowledge not only within the Sami society but also beyond it.
