Sport has been chosen as a way for promoting a healthy and socially active way of life for school youth. The institutions involved in this project are tackling common problems that youth have in the border region, including smoking, low rate of physical activity and underage drinking. Touch rugby was selected as an ideal sport to be introduced in Lithuania and Latvia because of its non-contact nature, helping to avoid injury. By means of sports children can learn the principles of fair play, compliance with the rules, respect for others and discipline. In order to involve youngsters and sport teachers in the project, a lot of information was communicated directly to the schools, through seminars for sport teachers and internet. Interactive methodology was prepared (video, brochure) to explain the rules of the game, demonstrate it in action. Practical exercises were included in the seminars to introduce the sport to the teachers. Further support to the school teams was available in the build-up to competitions – coaches regularly visited the schools and provided on-the-spot advice. Interest of school children was facilitated by their sport teachers. Dynamic internet portal www.balticrugby.net was created. Information on sport events, results of the competitions, information on seminars on this webpage was regularly updated. The portal captured youth’s attention (800 unique visitors) with its up-to-date content and attractive visual presentation. These activities resulted in increased interest about the project. The total of more than 2,000 children participated in the qualification rounds of the Joint Sport Competition, called the Sun, and 239 children from Latvia and Lithuania reached the finals. Joint Sport Competition, Sun Cup, became the highlight of the project and ensured a high level of motivation for the teachers and youth, pushing them to train, learn and practice sports. In addition, school buildings in the towns of Eleja and Joniski were equipped with modern teaching tools that can be used for teaching sports and school sport fields have been improved.
