The project targets the development of mountain ecosystems, ensuring their sustainability and supporting biodiversity over ca. 130 ha of selected areas in the Regions of Žilina and Prešov. Plant samples will be collected in order to determine dry matter yield and nutrient content. Soil samples will also be collected and analysed. Sedentary deer’ germinal products will be collected as part of wildlife monitoring, in order to verify their health condition and check for the presence of heavy metals in forest biotopes. Hydrological studies will also be carried out. Based on information from monitoring, management-level measures will be proposed to prevent biotopes of European and national significance from overgrowing and to support biodiversity (mowing, mulching, eco-renovation). The measures undertaken will result from the recommended management of the specific biotope, in line with the specific requirements of fauna and flora species. Damaged surfaces, or surfaces where volunteers have been removed, will undergo eco-renovation by mulching with freshly mowed grass clippings with a sufficient content in mature seeds of rich grassland and herb formations. To carry out these measures appropriate equipment will be ensured, which will also be used in the project’s durability period. Mountain ecosystems monitoring will be repeated after the planned activities have been completed, to compare their condition with the condition of undeveloped ecosystems. A development methodology will be drawn up to ensure sustainability of mountain ecosystems, as a model to apply in other mountain regions, since the problematics is pertinent in the whole of Europe. The project’s effects and the elaborated methodology will be presented in the framework of the project conference and at foreign and national symposiums organised outside the scope of the project, as well as on partners’ websites.
